FOR LIVING

SHADE GIVING
The series contains photographs of structures from South Sudan, Ethiopia and Sudan, whose purpose is to provide shade. The structures serve as meeting places and may not be entered by strangers at will. The shade-providing structures are places where decisions are made. One image in the series shows such a structure, which is connected to a tree to form a body that protects visitors. Other shade-providing structures have been erected by nomadic groups for temporary use as protection during their migration. The structures decay when the group moves on. All the structures in the series have in common that they are open at the sides.
The photographic archive of Winfried Bullinger on vernacular architecture from Africa. Dedicated to the owners of the buildings.
