MATAKAM, PODOKO

Winfried Bullinger - Nubian landscape in the region of Karima near the Nile in Sudan

According to their tradition, the Podoko people migrated from Kordofan in Sudan to the Mandara Mountains near Mora. They brought soil from their former homeland with them, which they keep in the village of Oudjila. The Podoko build large, roofed structures out of rubble stone. Inside these structures are tower-shaped food storehouses made of clay, with round openings serving as entrances. The houses, built of rubble stone, are situated in village communities on the mountains, surrounded by terraces. The Podoko settlement area is located near Mora in the northern part of the Mandara Mountains in Far North Cameroon. Due to their remote, high-altitude location, the Podoko villages are isolated.
